Dual Anniversary Forum: 40 years of Japan-Vietnam diplomatic relations and 40 years of University of Tsukuba (21/9/2013)

On September 21, 2103, University of Tsukuba organized the “Dual Anniversary Forum: 40 years of Japan-Vietnam diplomatic relations and 40 years of University of Tsukuba” in Ho Chi Minh City.

The “Dual Anniversary Forum” was to commemorate 40 years of Japan-Vietnam diplomatic relations and 40 years since the University made a new start under the new name “University of Tsukuba” from the original “Normal School” established in 1872.

A delegation from University of Tsukuba including the University’s President-Prof. Kyosuke Nagata, Vice President- Prof. Caroline Benton, Provost of Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences-Prof. Yasunori Kanaho, Vice Provost-Prof. Mitsuyasu Kato, Director of Southeast Asian Office-Prof. Osamu Ohneda and some other professors from the University came to Ho Chi Minh City to host the anniversary.

Joining the host were partner universities, institutes, organizations, hospitals of the University of Tsukuba in Vietnam like President of University of Science-Prof. Tran Linh Thuoc, Vice President of University of Medicine and Pharmacy HCMC-Assc. Prof. Tran Diep Tuan, President of HCMC University of Education-Assc. Prof. Nguyen Kim Hong, President of International University-Assc. Prof. Ho Thanh Phong, President of University of Fine Arts HCMC- Dr. Truong Phi Duc, President of SHTP-Assc. Prof. Le Hoai Quoc, Director of Biotechnology Center of HCMC-Dr. Duong Hoa Xo, Vice Director of ITB-Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Vice Director of Cho Ray Hospital-Assc. Prof. Tran Minh Truong, President of Neurosurgery Society of Vietnam-Assc. Prof. Vo Van Nho, and several other guests. Representative from Consulate General of Japan in HCMC, Mr. Inui Hiroyuki, Consul, also attended the ceremony. In addition to that, Vietnamese alumni of the universities also came to join the celebration.

Prof. Yasunori Kanaho started the Dual Anniversary Forum with an opening remark. Then, the President of University of Tsukuba, Prof. Kyosuke Nagata, made an address on development of cooperation between University of Tsukuba and universities, research institutes, hospitals and other organizations in Vietnam. Continuing the agenda, representatives from guest universities, institutes and hospital made congratulatory speeches.

Prior to the closing speech by Prof. Caroline Benton, a Japanese alumni of the University performed Iaido, Japanese martial arts associated with sword. Then, 8 Japanese students from University of Tsukuba performed Japanese music by Tsugaru Shamisen, a string instrument originating from “Tsugaru”, an area of heavy snowfall and one of the coldest area in Japan.

Vietnamese students from University of Science HCMC and University of Medicine and Pharmacy HCMC also contributed to the ceremony by playing “Đàn Tranh”, the Vietnamese plucked zither and performing some pieces of Vietnamese traditional dance.
